CHARLES WILSON: WARD 8 READ-A-THON PRESS RELEASE

Charles Wilson: Ward 8 Read-A-ThonPress Release

My Ward 8 Friends,

In the spirit of my Ward 8 council campaign "We Set the Tone," below are some Ward 8 illiteracy facts according to The State of Adult Literacy Report issued in 2007.

· Ward 8 ranks 2ND in residents over the age of 16 who are functionally illiterate (48.9%)

· Ward 8 only has TWO libraries (Washington Highlands and Parklands-Turner), but we have 25,264 children the most in the District. That is 25,264 growing minds without the full benefit of the library system.

· 47% of jobs the District require a college or advance degree
As your next Ward 8 City Council member and advocate I am VERY concerned about these staggering statistics. I want us to "Set The Tone," and invite you to my Community Read-A-Thon this Thursday, August 14th at 1pm to discuss SOLUTIONS to take aggressive action to curb this serious epidemic and save OUR children from being condemned to a lifetime of illiteracy.

Please join me on Thursday August 14, 2008 beginning at 1pm at Washington Highlands Library - 115 Atlantic Street, SW
We Set The Tone,
Charles Wilson
